Pull Your Sox Out
Mar 31st
It’s been an interesting last few days around these sporting parts. The Bears signed Jared Allen, the Badgers found their way to the Final Four, the Blackhawks season may be over, and the Bulls have done a fantastic job tricking everyone into thinking they are actually going to do something worthwhile this spring. It’s been a whirlwind. So before getting carried away with any of that I wanted to knock out the baseball season previews that I’ve been putting off for a good two weeks now. This year as always we’ll start on the Southside of town because it’s more More >
Art Eliminates Life
Mar 25th
I’m back on the road this week, living the Hampton Inn lifestyle which inherently means I’m always in a state somewhere between lidded coffee cups and I’m consuming terrible television by the boat load. Back in college I wrote a paper about how the writers of The Simpson’s were indirectly steering society towards a better tomorrow by highlighting the foibles of a one Mr. Homer J. Simpson. The essence of the paper was that in depicting Homer lying on the couch in his underwear picking his teeth with the mail they were sending a message to every American male that More >

Half Way There
Mar 21st
On this date every year the Earth stands at perfect attention to the sun with no slouch in either direction. For we 85% of the world’s population that live north of the equator today is the beginning of spring and thus the Spring Equinox is upon us. In many ways that means that we’re half way to the heat and sunshine that we all so desperately crave. The optimists amongst us however will note that we’re half way away from the deepest depths of winter as well. No matter how you look at it we’re 50% of the way to or More >
Bearing Their Thoughts
Mar 18th
This past weekend was my last “free” weekend for the foreseeable future. With no definite plans on the calendar, it meant that I found myself spending a good bit of time in the car running errands and in turn listening to sports talk radio. With spring training in full swing and the NCAA bracket assignments still up in the air the conversation topic du jour was that of the completion of the first week of NFL free agency – and specifically the Bears actions (or lack there of depending on the speaker).
As I listened to the various hosts and callers More >

Zip It Up
Mar 16th
This one goes out to the collective brain trust of the bagged salad industry…
Leave it to a bunch of salad tossers to bring to market a product that screws the consumer upon opening
It’s 2014, we landed men on the moon fifty years ago and a remote control car on Mars two years ago – why on God’s green Earth is there not a zip lock on bagged lettuce from the grocery store at this point? I can speak as both a single guy as well as a married husband & father of a family of less than six that I More >

An Homage To A Day Gone By
Mar 14th
There's anything but water in those cups I assure you...
This Sunday the fine Irish residents of our city (and those who call anything south of I-55 home) will gather on Western Avenue to cheer on their family members and neighbors as they parade down the middle of the normally busy street. While admirable in spirit, I cannot get behind the event out of principle. You see I have seen the view from Everest and you will have to pardon my lack of awe as we look out from atop Villa Olivia today. The Southside Irish Parade is a bastardized version More >
We’ve All Been Here
Mar 12th
My Cousin Michelle sent me this link yesterday and it hit a little too close to home. Since returning from Las Vegas last week I feel like my work week has been a series of conference calls and presentations. Let’s just say that this video hits a little too close to home. I am now actively attempting to fulfill each and every one of these roles depicted here before Friday afternoon.

Struggling With Sewing

The internet is many things to many people. In addition to bringing the world together socially, economically, and pornographically it also has ruined many a comedian’s observational humor bit. It wasn’t that long ago, think Seinfeld airing on NBC era, where a man could make a living standing in front of a brick wall with a microphone saying things like, “what’s with air conditioners? Do they have little eskimos in there blowing cold air in off their igloos?” or “how do all of the lightning bugs in the glass blub know how to light up when I flip this switch?” (note: More >

True Love Runs Deep
Mar 7th
I apologize for the last of posting this week as I’ve been spending my days and evenings in the city of sin all week and terms like, “downtime” and “a good opportunity to blog” have been foreign concepts. While not a huge Vegas guy, I certainly have had some fun and am always flummoxed by the extent of cheap artificial beauty in this town. From the faux architecture to the cosmetically altered individuals filling the casino floors, the whole thing comes off as cheap and insincere.
It’s these full week trips that also make me miss The Wife and The Wee More >

Winning In Spite Of Q
Mar 2nd
The last I checked the role of a coach it to guide and lead a team, not to provide a degree of difficulty
The Blackhawks are in the cat bird seat to win the 2014 Stanley Cup. Despite history making clear the difficulty in trying to repeat as keepers of the Cup, there is not a better odds-on favorite to hoist the hardware this summer at present. The Hawks are deep and talented and they’ve proven that this core knows what it takes to win a seven game series when it’s all on the line in May and June. Jonathan More >
