A Breath of Fresh Air
Jan 4th
While many of you were still shaking off the cob webs from the night before, visiting WebMD.com to confirm that a Brain Cloud is in fact not a real malady, the Chicago sports media was gathered at Halas Hall on New Year’s Day to hear Bears General Manager Phil Emery offer his rationale for the firing of Lovie Smith twenty-four hours earlier. In what can only be described a breath of fresh air, the new Bears GM, who had previously only spoken to the media on the day he was hired last spring and then again during the bye week this season, More >
The Smart Side of the Ledger

Times they are a changing on the Chicago sports scene. I honestly cannot say that there has been a time in this city’s history (at least in my lifetime) where each of our sporting franchises have been in such good hands from a front office perspective. Let’s take a lap around the various franchises for a quick peak at the brains percolating behind the scenes.
The Cubs
The Cubs are in the midst of a 13-5 run, easily their best of the season, and yet the front office is not losing focus of the big picture which involves reloading the entire system More >

Unless you’re one of the seventeen true NHL diehards who is still tuned into league news a full ten days after Lord Stanley has been hoisted, you may not know that this weekend is the NHL Draft. Much like the recent baseball draft, the NHL amatuer selection process is harder to get into because we don’t have a lot of exposure to most of the names that will be called Friday night and Saturday morning, and we most likely won’t see them again for another few years until they get called up to the league from their respective college, Junior, More >
The 2012-12 Blackhawks Season Recap: A Trail of Tears
May 10th
As one of our beloved Chicago teams sees their season crumble to the ground this evening, I feel as though I have finally reached closure on our last sporting heartbreak. Before we get too far along in taking a look at the season that was for the Chicago Blackhawks there are two important items that I’d suggest that you peruse as each says more than anything I can put into words:

First of all – awesome right? Each in their own right; I feel this is the best work Jesse Rogers has put together during his Hawks beat reporter tenure, and I’ve More >
A Glance At Our Chicago Sporting Culture
Apr 26th
I’ve been in St. Louis the past few days and while there I enjoyed some fantastic bar-b-que. I only mention this as it gives me an excuse to mention the fact that I attended the St. Louis Rib Fest last spring which for some inexplicable reason is still in the top 10 Google searches that lead people to this website. Either a lot of people want to know about this festival (that I personally found a wee bit lacking) – or – the St. Louis Rib Fest has no idea how to e-market themselves (they don’t even have a website for More >
Battle For My Fandom – An Unfair Advantage
Apr 12th
Thursday night is a big night for Chicago sports. While the Bulls host the Gargamel to their Smurfs in the Miami Heat, the Blackhawks officially kickoff their playoff run in the desert sun of Arizona. Obviously game 59 of an abbreviated NBA season does not carry the weight of a playoff opener, however given the fact that this is most likely a preview of the Eastern Conference Finals I’m expecting the quality of play on all fronts to be of the highest caliber. When these situations arise my gut reaction is to take to the internet and spill forth my reactions More >
The Ladies Guide to the 2012 Blackhawks Playoff Run

The key to competing in any competitive field is to do something that no one else is doing and stand out from the crowd. You need to fill a niche that has yet to be filled and plant your flag in its virgin soil. After several years of living with a member of the fairer sex I have come to realize that there’s nothing worse than having to watch “Dancing With The Stars” and yet I also know The Wife feels equally terrible about watching some “meaningless” (her words) sporting event on TV. Watching separate TVs in separate living spaces More >
The Anatomy of the Hockey Fight
Mar 26th
With America getting over its fascination with performance enhancing drugs and steroids, our sporting culture was caught with nothing to wring its hands over. This is a dangerous place for mass groups of people as inevitably they will find something to get all up in arms about (it’s just human nature). In the past two years they’ve found that cause: head injuries. Head injuries and concussions have become the talk of the sporting world. At times I want to give myself a head injury just to get away from all the noise about concussions and their long term effects.

Spring Cleaning Abound
Mar 18th
With our recent stretch of warm weather, the general populace of the Chicagoland area has gotten the itch to get outside and play. Be it kids on the beach (a bit of a stretch if you ask me), families dusting off their bikes, or old women cleaning up their yards, folks are finding excuses to get outside. Count me amongst the latter. Between assembling baby swings and bouncers, I spent the better part of this past weekend trimming rose bushes and grasses and chopping firewood. The springtime allows for one to start anew or re-assess their current situation and plan More >
Oh-Do-Ya Think You Can Win The Cup?
Feb 28th
The NHL’s trade deadline has passed. Teams have made their moves for better or worse, in a last ditch effort to load up for a deep playoff run or to sell of their spare parts for future draft picks and lottery tickets. Base on your team’s actions this past week you can get a feel for where their ownership and management teams feel they are at and where they want to be. It’s ideally a reality check where each organ-i-zation takes a look at their cards and in the immortal words of Kenny Rogers, decides whether to hold ‘em or More >
